Hillsborough County on the west coast of Florida is the fourth most populous county in the state with a population of 1,229,226 as of the 2010 Census.  First mapped and explored by the Spanish in the early 16th century, Hillsborough County was officially created in 1834 and named for Wills Hill, the Earl of Hillsborough and British Secretary of State for the Colonies in the late 1700s.

Tampa is the county seat of Hillsborough County.  Tampa, Temple Terrace and Plant City are incorporated cities, while more than 84 percent of Hillsborough County is unincorporated.  The county’s median household income in 2009 was $47,129 with a median age of 35.

The School District of Hillsborough County ranks as the eighth largest school district in the nation with approximately 190,000 students in 208 schools. 12 of the district’s 25 high schools are included in Newsweek’s list of America’s Best High Schools.  The University of South Florida, the University of Tampa and Hillsborough Community College are found in Tampa in Hillsborough County.

HART, the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority, serves the people of Hillsborough County with affordable public transportation.  Bus service, In-Town Trolleys, vanpools, and park & ride services are just the beginning of what HART has to offer.  The following major interstates and highways run through Hillsborough County:

The Hillsborough County Parks, Recreation and Conservation Department manages more than 70,000 acres of parkland and 42 year-round recreations centers.  From hiking and biking to camping and kayaking to youth and adult athletics, fun activities are easy to find throughout the county. Alafia River State Park, Hillsborough River State Park, C.W Bill Young Regional Reservoir and Egmont Key State Park and Wildlife Refuge are popular destinations for families.
